The story of

EArbuddy

Liza opened her eyes. Today was the day! Yesterday she had seen the trucks pass by outside her kitchen window. She had tried to count them but lost track somewhere around 26.

The posters were everywere and had been for weeks. She couldn't read just yet but the large colorful images spoke to her in a more intense way than any words could ever do. She had seen merry-go-rounds, rollercoasters, tents. And in the middle, he was always there staring her right in the eyes. The clown.

Liza was not afraid of clowns like many of her friends were. She knew that behind the mask a clown was just like anyone else. Someone who might have a family and kids. He just didn't go to an office everyday to sit by a computer. Most of her friend's dads did that.

The first time Liza saw one of the posters she ran home as fast as she could. She knew mom would be home and she wanted to know if she could go when they came to town. Liza's mom said that it was ok, as long as Julia and her mom were also going. They were. "This is the best day of my life!" Liza thought as she jumped out of bed.

She arrived to the gates long before they opened because she wanted to be the very first one to enter. Julia and her mom were a bit late and had told Liza to stand still as soon as she passed the gates and wait for them there. Liza did what she was told. In front of her the long queue of children and their parents passed by. All of a sudden she felt someone tapping on her shoulder.

Liza turned around and there he was. The clown. Many things went through Liza's head at this exact moment. She wasn't afraid of clowns, but he was so close. Mama had told her to stay away from bad men, but the clown was not a bad man. Or was he? He had the biggest smile and happiest face Liza had ever seen. And when she looked into his eyes she saw how they started to glow.

The clown showed Liza that she should follow him and took of. He was fast! In a second he had disappeared behind the rodeo and Liza didn't know what to do. She looked at the line of people in front of here and Julia and her mom was nowhere to be seen. It couldn't hurt if she followed the clown to see what he wanted, could it? Liza left her safe spot by the entrance and headed toward the rodeo.

The clown was nowhere to be found, but Liza saw an opening into one of the circus tents and headed towards it. "He must have gone in there", she thought. Outside the sun was shining bright and the darkness inside the tent paralyzed her eyes. She saw nothing. Then out of the blue - something that sounded like an explosion. And at the exact same millisecond the lights went on, lasers filled the tent and enormous spotlights lit up the back wall of the tent. And there he was.

The clown's arms moved quickly over the mixing console in front of him. His fingers pushed something here, turned something there. Displays were lit up, buttons where pressed. The music blasted through the masive speakers behind the clown, and Liza saw his lips moving. She focused her eyes and saw the words he was forming to himself. "Equalizer and compressor. Calling this a filter sweep. Reverb, delay, the tape will stop!" Then suddenly the music stopped and the clown looked a Liza. "And then we add the whistle!" he shouted and started whisteling to the music that he turned back on.

Liza stayed and continued watching the clown DJ in action. She saw how happy he was and how his enormous grin stretched all over his face. Over and over again the clown looked up, as if to see if Liza was still standing there. And every time he saw her, the smile grew even bigger.

Later, Liza thought a lot about that day and about her encounter with the mysterious clown DJ. Why had he come to get her at the entrance? And why was he so happy when she came and listened to his show? The only explanation Liza could think of was that the clown really had a hard time finding an audience for his music, and Liza was the first brave child that wasn't scared by his appearance. Anyway, it didn't matter. Liza would keep this experience close to her heart for the rest of her life, that's for sure.

The EArbuddy lyrics

My mama told me that I should stay away

From the bad man who would hurt me

My mama said that I never could obey

If someone came up and said

“Hey little one, you wanna play?”

Once I saw this colored poster

With the greatest roller coaster

I ran back home and said I wanted to go

I passed the gates and I was greeted by this happy face, I

Looked at him and saw his eyes start to glow

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my earbuddy

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my earbuddy

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my earbuddy

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my earbuddy

You wanna be

He showed me I should follow him

I looked upon his friendly grin, he

Ran inside behind the rodeo

The darkness paralyzed my eyes

And then I saw the big surprise, I

Had arrived to a one man show

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my earbuddy

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my earbuddy

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

(I don’t know where I am)

You wanna be my earbuddy

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my earbuddy

(Where’s my mom?)

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

(This place is scary)

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be my

You wanna be

The volume knob brings out the synth

Below I add a pounding bass

Together with a steady beat

And top it with percussion

Equalizer and compressor

Calling this a filter sweep

Reverb, delay the tape will stop

And then we add the whistle!

(Ok!)
